On May 16th, we gave the starting pistol shot to the final phase of the project “Educando con Garra” (Educating with Claws/Enthusiasm). In the first year of upper secondary studies Biology class, students have been working since September to make this moment possible. They got involved in the repopulation of one of the most threatened species of nocturnal birds of prey: the barn owl, whose numbers have fallen drastically in the province. The students themselves were responsible for writing up the project for the Ministry of Sustainable Development, looking for sponsors, selling raffle tickets, building the release box and the educational campaign created for the school and the Science Park. The last step was receiving 4 owlets from Brinzal (Madrid), which, after being introduced to the whole school, were placed in the release box on the school terrace. From there, they will be released in just 3 weeks, thereby recovering the territory which their ancestors inhabited. This has been a way of teaching competences and giving students tools for the real world, which is in constant change.
